Veneers Q & A

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are paper-thin “shells” of porcelain that cover the front portions of your natural teeth. They are an incredibly effective cosmetic treatment that can address several aesthetic concerns.

Compared to having multiple treatments for various issues, dental veneers are a great value for the investment. While veneers will eventually need to be replaced, you can expect to enjoy up to 20 years from a new set of veneers with proper care.

What kinds of issues can dental veneers correct?

Dental veneers cover the entire visible surface of your teeth and can correct numerous cosmetic issues. Some issues that can be concealed using dental veneers include:

  • Severe discoloration
  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Minor misalignment
  • Irregularities in the size or shape of teeth

Some people only need one dental veneer to correct a chip or balance the size of the tooth, while others have veneers placed on all of the teeth visible when smiling.

What is the process for getting dental veneers?

Getting custom veneers takes a few visits, so patience is important. During your consultation, Dr. Alexander examines your teeth to make sure there is no active dental decay or gum disease that needs to be treated prior to moving forward with veneers.

You’ll also discuss what improvements you’re hoping to achieve with your veneers and ask any questions you have about the process or how to care for your veneers. The next step involves removing a portion of your natural tooth tissue to make room for the veneers.

You’ll receive numbing medication to eliminate sensation during this step of the process. A set of impressions are made to guide the crafting of your custom veneers, which are manufactured in an off-site dental lab. Temporary veneers are placed to protect your teeth while you wait for your new veneers.

Once the permanent veneers arrive, you’ll return to have them checked for fit and color before being cemented into place. This completes the process, and you’ll walk out with your new smile ready to share with the world.
